Volunteering at DIG
Do you love history or archaeology? Would you like to help visitors connect with York’s fascinating past? Join us at DIG, where we bring archaeology to life for schools and families.
DIG offers a hands-on experience, letting kids become archaeologists for the day. They dig through indoor pits based on real excavations from York Archaeology. Along the way, they also get close to genuine archaeological finds.
As a DIG Tour Support Volunteer, you’ll work alongside our archaeologist tour guides. You’ll help lead sessions for school groups and family tours during school holidays. With your support, children will enjoy even more chances to explore the replica excavations and artefacts in depth.
Who Can Join?
As with many of our roles you do not need existing archaeological, historical or guiding knowledge or experience, we will help you to learn everything you need to know. We welcome expressions of interest to join the team from anyone with enthusiasm for archaeology or education and a desire to contribute their time to enhance our visitors’ experience. Volunteers at DIG will also need to enjoy talking to a wide range of people, including being comfortable interacting with younger visitors, and be able to offer a bright, friendly welcome to all.
How Do I Apply?

To ensure all volunteers who join us are given all the training and support they need we have a system of regular intakes throughout the year which offer an opportunity to join the team in a group of other new volunteers.
Within 28 days of applying you’ll receive an invite to our next group application meeting, giving you a chance to meet the team and other applicants and learn more about the volunteering roles on offer.
