Volunteering at DIG
Have you got a passion for archaeology? Would you like to help us engage visitors with York’s rich archaeological heritage and share a love of the past?
DIG is a hands-on archaeological adventure for schools and families. Kids get a chance to play the role of archaeologists on indoor excavation pits based on some of YAT’s real-life digs around York, as well as get up close to real archaeological artefacts.
DIG volunteers help support our archaeologist tour guides on our ‘DIG sites’ for school groups and for family tours in school holidays. Their involvement offers enhanced opportunities for children to engage with the archaeology and finds represented on our four replica excavations.
Who Can Join?
As with many of our roles you do not need existing archaeological, historical or guiding knowledge or experience, we will help you to learn everything you need to know. We welcome expressions of interest to join the team from anyone with enthusiasm for archaeology or education and a desire to contribute their time to enhance our visitors’ experience. Volunteers at DIG will also need to enjoy talking to a wide range of people and be able to offer a bright, friendly welcome to all.
When Can I Enquire?
We welcome new volunteer involvement via set intake periods each year. These offer an opportunity to join the team in the company of other new volunteers as well as lots of training and support along the way. We are not currently open for applications.
You will be given a chance to read our Privacy Notice before applying to volunteer/undertake a placement with us. You can also click here to read this.
