Covid-19 Safety

We strongly advise wearing  face coverings in our attractions and gift shops.

Covid-19 Safety

Please note that these safety procedures may change according to government guidance and as the situation progresses.

We strongly advise wearing a face covering in our attractions and gift shops, unless you are exempt.

Please keep socially distanced from other parties and use the hand sanitiser stations located around the buildings.

To help us minimise face-to-face interactions at our admissions desk and to reduce queueing, pre-booking your visit is advised. Standby places may be available if a time slot has space.

Many thanks for your cooperation and consideration as we endeavour to keep DIG safe and enjoyable for all our visitors, staff and volunteers.

For more information on our safety procedures, read on.

Before you visit

Pre-booking your tickets online or by calling 01904 615505 is advisable.

The entire attraction is thoroughly cleaned daily. Staff will be adhering to a comprehensive hygiene policy.

Doors and windows will be kept open as much as possible for ventilation.

When you arrive

Please arrive at your given timeslot and join the socially distanced queue outside the church along the pavement. Please remain 1 metre from other groups.

At your timeslot, groups will be invited inside one at a time.

We strongly encourage you to wear a face-covering throughout your visit for the safety of other visitors and our staff.

The DIG experience

Our friendly archaeologists will lead you around the DIG experience, guiding you in the social distancing and safety procedures. They will also be strictly following our full hygiene policy, to ensure the highest standards of cleanliness throughout the attraction.

First, you will be given a short talk introducing you to DIG and what archaeology is all about. Our knowledgeable archaeologists will tell you all about the fascinating artefacts found in York from 2000 years of history.

Then, you will get to dig around in our four historical dig pits. The plastic trowels you will use are replaced after every use, with staff cleaning them thoroughly between uses before returning them to circulation.

Finally, each group will be able to explore our galleries with a self-led activity. A staff member will be available to help you and to make sure that everyone remains socially distanced.

You will have the opportunity to browse our gift shop at the end of your visit.

You will exit DIG through our multi-sensory garden, to ensure social distancing as you leave the attraction.

Our staff will be ready to help

Throughout your DIG experience, you will meet several of our friendly staff. All our staff will be trained to uphold our safety procedures and will be happy to answer any questions or note any suggestions you have.

We will ask all visitors to be considerate of each other and of our staff.

Please note that these safety procedures may change according to government guidance. If you have any queries in advance of your visit, please do not hesitate to email us on
